How to Use This Book If you are the type of person who never reads instructions, here are my “Quickstart” suggestions on how to get the most from Seismic Design of Building Structures during your exam preparation. 1. Get copies of the IBC and ASCE/SEI7 and their errata. 2. Start reading this book from the first chapter. Don’t skip around, because the book builds on concepts. 3. Read slowly; a page or two a day is plenty. Look up every code section in the referenced sources. 4. Work through all of the example and practice problems. 5. Put lots of tabs on the building code tables. 6. Use the indexes extensively. 7. Don’t forget to take it with you to your exam. Now, beyond those suggestions, how you will use this book depends on why you obtained it. Seismic Design was specifically written for engineering exam review. As the exams vacillated each year between areas of emphasis, the scope and depth of this book also increased. And so, this book now covers a lot of bases, and it can be used for other exams (e.g., SE and ARE) and general familiarity. However, even though its scope and depth have increased enormously over the years, I suspect this book will remain typecast in its leading role—that of an engineering exam review book. Therefore, I am writing this section assuming that you are using Seismic Design for that purpose. Although this book develops subjects gradually, gently, and linearly, it crams innumerable concepts onto every page. If you don’t have a seismic background, you’ll pretty much have to start at page one and work your way through the book, page by page. I don’t assume that you know anything. I’ve skipped almost all of the higher-order mathematics. And I’ve tried to write and edit the material to provide instruction that is intuitive. However, you’ll still need to go slowly.

As a practicing I have found Michael Lindeburg's book simply invaluable. It spans the lecture room and the design office effortlessly. Reading the first three chapters was akin to a refresher course in tectonic geology. If I had to say something less charitable it would probably be the need for more connection and joint details to address the horrific shear generated at these points. Lastly, the cost. To me its a tax deductible, but to students on a tight budget it can be a nightmare, comparable to ground acceleration of 5 g's.

I have had minimal exposure to ELFP and the simplified static procedure in my undergrad. I have been taking the SEAOI review course for the SE exam and this book pairs very well with content, order, and pace. If you have had minimal exposure to seismic, this book is excellent in both learning the theory and code application. I will likely purchase the SEAOC manual for seismic design examples as the problems presented in here are OK. I would definitely recommend, but not as a complete stand-alone resource.

Got this truck for my 5 yr. old grandson for Christmas. He will love it. Good construction and a perfect size.

I don't know who left those other reviews but they must have never seen well made product. The rotating drum moves side to side and constantly falls off. My boy was holding it by the drum and as we walked across the street, the rest of the truck fell off, right in a middle of the street. The line that goes across the drum is not lined up. The plastic and metal parts to not mend well and is overall made cheaply. 19.99 bucks is highly over proceedfor something that should cost no more than 7.99. Iwould call this product in so many bad words. Don't waste your time.

This is THE lowest quality toy I have ever purchased. It was emarassing to give as a gift. The picture is very misleading. If I would have had time to send it back I most certainly would have, instead I gave it to my grandson with regret, it won't last long. Too high of a price for a VERY small, VERY cheap plastic toy. How disappointing.

Very well constructed, the wheels work wells, goes smoothly on my hardwood floor. Has lots of details to it, there's even seats and a steering wheel lol... but the doors are not accessible, that's good, one less thing to worry about it coming loose. A great gift for kids, suggested age is 3+.

Now he has a miniature of the real thing. He loves it! Actually, I also like it. The 1:48 scale makes this a perfect companion for your Lionel or Williams electric trains. What a wonderful birthday or Christmas present for a youngster.

Nice truck which I purchased for my grandsons Christmas gift. I was very disappointed that all the writing on the box was either Japanese or Chinese. With all the problems that have previously come up with toys and such for these, I am left a bit sceptical. Other than that, the truck is sold and he liked it.

About the Author
Elizabeth Laird is the author of Red Sky in the Morning, The Garbage King, Crusade and Lost Riders. She has been shortlisted five times for the Carnegie Medal. She has traveled extensively throughout the Middle East, and her son lived for four years in Iran. She met her husband while travelling in India and they lived together in Iraq, Lebanon and Austria. Her other books for Frances Lincoln are A Fistful of Pearls: Stories from Iraq, Pea Boy, and The Ogress and the Snake: Stories from Ethiopia. Laird divides her time between London and Edinburgh.
Shirin Adl was born in Harlow, Essex, and grew up in Iran. Back in England, she studied Illustration at Loughborough University, going on to win the Hallmark M&S Talented Designer Award. She also designs greetings cards and makes cartoons. Adl's books for Frances Lincoln are Ramadan Moon and Elizabeth Laird's Pea Boy. She lives in Oxford.

Kaveh, the Courageous Blacksmith

Zahhak sat hunched on his ivory throne, with his crown of turquoise
pressing down on his head, brooding about Feridun, while the snakes
writhed on his shoulders.
“I must be protected,” he thought. “I must gather armies of men,
with demons and angels in the ranks, to save me from this boy.”
One day, as he sat scowling in his audience hall, there was a commotion
at the door of the palace.
“I want justice!” a man was shouting. “I demand to see the king!”
“Who is it? Who’s there?” asked Zahhak fearfully.
A furious man entered the audience chamber, beating his head with
his hands.“I am Kaveh, the blacksmith,” he called out in his deep voice.
“And you, O king, are an evil tyrant! Eighteen sons I had, good men all
of them. Seventeen have been sacrificed to feed your loathsome snakes,
and now the last, my youngest, waits for death. What have I done to
deserve this? Let my last son go! You owe me this, at least.”
Zahhak listened, frightened and astonished. Then he smiled a false
smile.
“You will see what a good and noble king I am,” he said. “Your
son is free to go. But first sign this document, which my elders have
prepared, telling the world how merciful I am.”
The sight of the document made Kaveh more furious than ever.
“Give that thing to me,” he bellowed. “I’ll show you how I’ll sign it!”
He snatched the document from Zahhak’s hands, and tore it in two.
The king’s servants and courtiers stared in wonder as Kaveh strode
away to rescue his imprisoned son.
“Why did you let him go, sire?” they asked Zahhak. “No one has
ever dared to speak to you like that before.”
Zahhak shook his head, puzzled. “When he entered my hall,” he said,
“I seemed to see a mountain of iron rise up between us, and when he
beat his hands against his head, I felt that my own heart was bruised.”

The blacksmith’s son leaps from the tyrant’s cage
And the streets echo to his cries of rage,
While on the throne the serpents writhe and hiss.
Threatening Zahhak with their deadly kiss.
Outside the palace, a crowd gathered around the blacksmith and his son.
Kaveh ripped off the leather apron which he wore when working in his
forge, and fixed it to a lance to make a banner.
“Men of honour!” he cried. “Follow me! We’ll go to Feridun. He’ll
deliver us from the tyrant Zahhak!”
A cheer went up. The people flocked to Kaveh’s leather banner. They
followed him all the way to Feridun’s palace, and when the young hero
came out to greet them, they raised a deafening shout.
“You are the man to lead us!” they cried. “You’ll be our king!”
Feridun took the leather apron and decorated it with cloth of gold
and sparkling jewels. On the tip of Kaveh’s lance, he placed a moonwhite
globe. “This will be my royal banner,” he declared.
A humble apron, with its leather string,
Is now the sign and symbol of a king.
